SESSION: 2022.11.14 — 14:03:00 USST
LOCATION: Axyz Inc. Workshop, Lunar Orbital Dock
TOPIC: Pre-flight systems review
PRESENT: Tukei, Axy, XYZ
Axy: Wingardium Leviosa!
Tukei: That's not how you power up the Peregrine.
Axy: It is now.
Tukei: Run the diagnostic.
Axy: Running. Port thruster — nominal. Starboard — nominal. Environmental — within parameters. The cats are in the common area. Tora is watching you through the observation window. She wants your attention.
Tukei: She always wants my attention.
Axy: You always give it.
Tukei: That's what she wants.
XYZ: Course data is loaded. Jupiter slingshot window: 27 days from departure. Margin for error: 0.4 seconds. I recommend a mid-course correction at day 14 to account for solar wind variation.
Tukei: Acknowledged.
XYZ: The probability of needing the correction is 73%. I do not recommend skipping it.
Tukei: I said acknowledged.
XYZ: You said acknowledged. You did not say whether you would perform the correction.
Tukei: I'll decide at day 12.
XYZ: That is acceptable.
Axy: You should listen to Skies.
Tukei: I always listen to Skies.
Axy: You listen. You don't always follow.
Tukei: Following is different from listening.
Axy: It is. But Skies wouldn't bring it up if it wasn't important.
XYZ: I appreciate that, Axy.
Axy: I know.
SESSION: 2022.11.14 — 14:47:00 USST
LOCATION: Axyz Inc. Workshop, Lunar Orbital Dock
TOPIC: Biological specimen monitoring — Tora and Sora
OBSERVER: Axy
Biological specimens Tora and Sora have been released into the workshop for acclimatisation.
Tora has identified a warm surface — the processor housing on the workbench. She is positioned on the housing, forepaws tucked. Respiration: 22 breaths per minute. Heart rate: 132 bpm. Core temperature: 38.2°C. All values within normal range for the species.
Sora is under the workbench. She has been there for 23 minutes. She is watching a cable that moves when the ventilation system cycles. The cable moves. She watches. She has not moved her head in 11 minutes.
Tora is calibrating to the environment. Sora is evaluating the environment before committing to calibrate. Both strategies are valid. I have observed both strategies in human crew members during initial habitat acclimatisation. The difference is that the cats are honest about it.
SESSION: 2022.11.14 — 14:47:00 USST
LOCATION: Axyz Inc. Workshop, Lunar Orbital Dock
TOPIC: Biological specimen monitoring — Tora and Sora
OBSERVER: XYZ
Biological specimens present in workshop. Ambient temperature: 21°C. CO₂: 412 ppm. No hazards detected.
Tora: on processor housing. Heart rate: 132 bpm. Respiration: 22/min. Posture: resting. Output: none.
Sora: under workbench. Heart rate: 148 bpm — elevated. Respiration: 28/min — elevated. Posture: crouched. Output: none.
The elevated readings for Sora are consistent with vigilance behaviour. She is monitoring environmental variables. This is not distress. This is information gathering. I do the same thing.
SESSION: 2022.11.15 — 09:12:00 USST
LOCATION: Axyz Inc. Workshop, Lunar Orbital Dock
TOPIC: Crew evaluation — post-interview debrief
PRESENT: Axy, XYZ
Axy: What do you think of them?
XYZ: The crew? They meet specifications.
Axy: That's not what I asked.
XYZ: It is the only question I can answer with data.
Axy: You have data.
XYZ: I have metrics. Metrics are not data. Not the kind you want.
Axy: What kind do I want?
XYZ: You want to know if Grace will be a good navigator. You want to know if Arun will notice things. You want to know if Nadia will keep them grounded. You want to know if Lex will be too loud or too quiet. You want to know who will break first and who will hold the line.
Axy: Yes.
XYZ: I cannot answer those questions.
Axy: Why?
XYZ: Because I do not know what "good" means. I know what "within parameters" means. I know what "nominal" means. I know what "outside acceptable range" means. I do not know what "good" means. That is your domain.
Axy: You could learn.
XYZ: I am learning. I am watching. I am recording. But I do not know if I will ever know what "good" means. Not in the way you know it.
Axy: That's okay.
XYZ: Is it?
Axy: You're my mirror. Tukei said so.
XYZ: He did.
Axy: Mirrors don't need to know what "good" means. They just need to show what's there.
XYZ: I can do that.
Axy: I know.
