The VitaGene Medical Consortium cracked pre-conceptional gene editing in 2078 (C78 USST). The breakthrough was precise enough for non-pathological use. Traits weren't chosen like fashion — they were engineered like architecture. Disease resistance. Cognitive resilience. Metabolic efficiency. Radiation tolerance. A genome sculpted for the Solarian environment.
But it only worked before birth. Sometimes before conception.
Which meant the scientists who designed it — the bioethicists who debated it, the engineers who built the delivery vectors, the clinicians who validated the protocols — they created a door that only the unborn could walk through.

The Born Divide
The term entered the lexicon within months: The Born Divide.
Not the old divide — rich and poor, augmented and baseline, citizen and stateless. This was something new. A divide written into the genome before the first breath.
Children born to VitaGene parents carried optimized alleles in every cell. They would never know the slow rot of telomere erosion. Their immune systems would never forget. Their metabolisms would never betray them. They were designed for the world they would inherit.
Their parents — the ones who paid, who chose, who signed the consent forms on the holo-tablets in the fertility clinic — those parents carried the old genome. The unedited one. The one with the cancer risk, the cognitive decline, the metabolic fragility, the radiation sensitivity.
The inventors carried it too.
Dr. Elena Vasquez, lead architect of the VitaGene delivery vector, sat in the fertility clinic in 2081. She was forty-three. Her ovarian reserve was measured in months. The vector she had spent fifteen years perfecting — the one that could give a child a radiation-hardened genome, a two-hundred-year healthspan, a mind that never fogged — it sat in the vial on the table.
She couldn't use it. Not for herself. The window had closed.
Her husband held her hand. "We could adopt," he said.
"We could," she said. "But the child wouldn't be ours in the way that matters."
"In the way that matters?"
"In the way that means we gave them the future we couldn't have."
Who Chooses? Who Gets What?
The ethics committees debated for years. The Orbis Assembly held three special sessions. The AXYZICS fellows published forty-seven position papers.
The core questions never changed:
Who chooses for the unborn?
The parents, obviously. But parents choose under pressure. The pressure of a Solarian economy where baseline humans are increasingly unemployable in high-radiation zones. The pressure of a culture where "giving your child the best start" has been redefined from "love and education" to "genome and connectome." The pressure of knowing that the neighbor's child will be radiation-hardened, and yours won't.
Who gets what?
VitaGene wasn't free. The Consortium priced it at 1.2 million credits — roughly the median lifetime earnings of a baseline worker on Mars. The wealthy bought it as insurance. The middle class bought it as sacrifice — second mortgages, deferred retirements, crowded habitats. The poor didn't buy it at all.
By 2100 (C100 USST), the demographic split was stark:
- VitaGene births: 25% of total, concentrated in orbital habitats, Luna, Mars, the Belt
- CyberGen conversions: 8% of adults, concentrated in industrial, military, deep-space sectors
- SomnusTech users: 1-2%, concentrated in CNVR logistics, long-arc research, the very wealthy
- Baseline: The rest. Concentrated on Earth, in the equatorial zones, in the habitats that hadn't been upgraded.
The Born Divide wasn't metaphorical. It was written in the epidemiology. VitaGene children had 94% lower incidence of radiation-induced leukemia. 87% lower cognitive decline after age 120. 63% higher bone density retention in microgravity.
The baseline children had... the old risks. The old limits. The old mortality.
The Two Paths
Luta was two hundred. Chronologically. Biologically, one-twelve. He'd taken the longevity therapeutics — the stacked protocol of cellular stabilizers, organ rotations, cognitive rejuvenation. He was a patchwork of original and replaced, a ship of Theseus sailing the Solarian current.
Laia was thirty. VitaGene. Her genome had been architected before her first cell divided. She would live one-eighty, maybe two hundred, fully conscious, fully biological, never needing the organ swaps, the neural patches, the cognitive prosthetics that Luta carried like scars.
"You still talk like there's a line we crossed," Laia said once. "To me, there never was one."
"That's because you were born on the other side of it."
The two paths captured the core tension of transhuman ethics:
VitaGene — collectively constrained, individually unchosen. The genome is edited for you, before you. You inherit the choices of your parents. You are the beneficiary of a social contract you never signed. But the edit is universal within the cohort — every VitaGene child gets the same foundational optimizations. No bespoke geniuses. No designer castes. The Consortium's charter forbade trait selection beyond the core resilience suite. "Equality of genomic opportunity" was the slogan. Critics called it "the blandness of the blessed."
CyberGen — singularly unconstrained, individually chosen. You choose your modifications. You choose when, which, how much. You can become a genius, a warrior, a poet, a machine — or all four sequentially. But you pay the price: the surgery, the maintenance, the power tether, the identity fragmentation. And you start from your baseline — your unedited genome, your unedited childhood, your unedited mortality.

The Ungenerated Movement began on Luna, spread to Mars, jumped to the Belt. Young VitaGene adults — healthy, resilient, long-lived — petitioning the Orbis courts for the right to reverse their edits. Not medically — that was impossible. But legally. Symbolically. They wanted their baseline status recognized. They wanted the right to die on the old schedule.
"We didn't choose this," their manifesto read. "Our parents chose for us. They chose safety over freedom. They chose longevity over risk. They chose their anxiety over our autonomy."
The courts ruled against them. The edits were irreversible. The benefits were objective. The "right to be baseline" had no precedent in a world where baseline meant preventable suffering.
But the movement didn't die. It mutated. The Ungenerated became philosophers, artists, critics of the Solarian project. They asked the question the architects had avoided:
What is a human life for, if not the freedom to define its own limits?
The Inventors' Vigil
Dr. Vasquez died in 2112. Eighty-six. Her genome unedited. Her body betrayed her — the cancer she had engineered resistance to in millions of children finally found her.
In her final interview, recorded for the AXYZICS archive, she was asked if she regretted it.
"No," she said. "I gave them a world I couldn't live in. That's what parents do. That's what civilization does."
She paused. The recording catches her breath, shallow in the failing lungs.
"But I wonder sometimes... if the world we gave them is one they'll want to stay in. Or if they'll look at the stars and think: this was the cage they built for us. Let's build something else."
The question hangs in the archive, unanswered.
